Irene Cara, the Oscar-winning vocalist behind the songs “Fame” and “Flashdance” titles, passed away on Friday night at the age of 63, according to her publicist.

Cara passed away from an unspecified cause in her Florida home. Her publicist told Eyewitness News that she had passed away.

Irene Cara passed away, publicist Judith A. Moose announced on behalf of her family, “with tremendous sadness.”

Cara received training in music, dancing, and acting as a youngster and made early television and stage appearances in the 1970s, including ones on PBS and Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show.”

However, she shot to stardom after being chosen for the musical “Fame” in 1980. Originally cast as a dancer, she later had the part of Coco Hernandez created for her, and she sang the album’s lead song.

After “Fame,” she received nominations for the Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Artist Grammy awards.

With the title track to “Flashdance,” the movie starring Jennifer Beals as an aspiring dancer, she later won a Grammy and an Oscar.

She continued to pursue a dual career in music and acting, making appearances on television and in movies including “City Heat” and “D.C. Cab.” She also took the stage for live plays and musicals.

Irene’s family has asked for privacy as they deal with their bereavement, according to Moose. She was a stunningly talented person whose films and songs will live on forever.
