Missouri Bridge Under Construction Collapses In Clay County, Killing Construction Worker

On Wednesday afternoon in Clay County, a bridge that was being built collapsed, killing one person.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the collapse near 148th Street and Shady Grove Road was first reported at 1:44 p.m. The structure crosses Carroll Creek. In an area to the east of Kearney,

Four people were trapped when the structure collapsed, according to Sarah Boyd, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. Only three of them were able to escape the collapse. They were brought to hospitals with minor injuries, according to Boyd in a news release.

One man passed away. The victim was identified by authorities as Connor Ernst, 22, on Thursday. He lived in Missouri’s California.

The sheriff’s office reported that numerous contractor firms were there when the building collapsed.

The two-lane bridge’s construction started in May 2021, and it was scheduled to open in early 2023. The bridge had been closed since 2016.

An engineering contractor was on the scene Wednesday to evaluate the bridge before the deck was poured, according to the Clay County Highway Department, which stated that there were no safety concerns on the project prior to its collapse. A probe has been requested by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration.
