The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has deftly unveiled the “My NHIS” app online registration system. It is an easy mobile app solution that was launched to let citizens of Ghana and other countries use their Ghana cards and sign up for the NHIS whenever it is most convenient for them.

People can comfortably sit anywhere and use any mobile phone to sign up for the NHIS, similar to the NHIS Mobile Renewal platform. On December 5, 2022, Vice President Alhaji, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia officially unveiled the in-house digital platform at the Tamale Dungu campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS). The event was held in observance of NHIS Active Month with the theme “The role of Digitalization in Modern Healthcare Delivery: Recounting Ghana’s ICT Journey in the Fourth Republic.”

In his introductory remarks, Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia reviewed the history of the NHIS and said, “The NHIS, since its implementation, has without a doubt contributed to greater consumption of healthcare services, leading to improved health outcomes for the population. Over the past 20 years, maternal and child fatalities have significantly decreased.

People who previously had difficulty affording healthcare now have access to it without having to pay for it when they need it. “We are pursuing digitalization not for its own sake, but as a method of delivering improved services to our people,” the vice president said when explaining the government’s digitalization plan. To make this possible, we are setting up mechanisms and using the data.

“It is impossible to overstate the importance of digital health solutions in our healthcare system. As a response to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) request that member nations employ digital health interventions in their health systems to improve access to healthcare and population well-being, we have started a digitalization drive in the health sector during the last few years.

He asserted that the majority of Ghana’s public and commercial healthcare service providers still depend on the NHIS for their financial stability.

“The NHIS has helped healthcare providers by increasing their financial resources, which has led to the expansion of healthcare facilities, particularly in the private sector.”

Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia underlined the necessity of linking the NHIS and Ghana cards so that current and future members of the Scheme can use a single card to obtain medical services.

“The NHIS card will be phased out and the Ghana Card would be the sole card for accessing healthcare services in the credentialled healthcare institutions after all members of the Scheme are linked to their Ghana Cards.”

We want to make sure that we can increase access to high-quality healthcare. Our hospitals are in the process of going digital, as are the public health facilities’ medical records.

“This has increased access to healthcare for those who need it, improved efficiency, and effectiveness.”

NHIA Board Chair

Dr. Ernest K. P. Kwarko, the chairman of the NHIA Board, credited the government’s strong support for the NHIA’s recent advances.

He claims that Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President, has played a significant role in the implementation of the Mobile Renewal Service, Electronic Claims Management, Biometric Application, and Linkages Between the NHIS and Ghana Cards.

NHIA Chief Executive

In his welcome speech at Alaafee Bonzali Naa I, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye praised the former president John Agyekum Kufour for establishing the NHIS in 2003.

“19 years ago, Ghana embarked on a mission to provide financial risk protection for its inhabitants and to lessen the risks of resting access to healthcare on the shoulders of the cash and carry system,” according to H.E. John Agyekum Kufuor.

This led to the creation of the National Health Insurance Scheme, which has continued to be a crucial tool in the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services to all Ghanaian citizens.

“However, the scope of this healthcare service provision is fundamentally dependent on our capacity to grow membership in order to attain Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030 as intended by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. To this end, the operationalization of the Scheme and the numbers enrolled on the National Health Insurance Scheme database have benefited greatly from digitalization.

“The National Health Insurance Authority’s digitization journey has been a constant spectacular process, especially these past several years where it feeds into a wider government agenda heavily superintended by the Digitization Messiah himself, H.E Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he continued.

“This digital effort infused high levels of vibrancy in our operations and has been the preferred option for renewing NHIS membership and linking to the Ghana card since 2018,” the company said.

Dr. Okoe Boye discussed the value of the recently released MyNHIS App.

“The Scheme has been elevated to a new level. MyNHIS, a new NHIS mobile application, is a one-stop shop. Digitization is still the way of the future.

Dr. Okoe Boye reaffirmed that Ghana’s primary method for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030 was the NHIS.

MyNHIS App Benefits

Corporate clients and other individuals will be able to register for the NHIS using their Ghana Cards through the MyNHIS mobile app without having to physically visit one of the NHIA district offices in order to receive the same service.

Additionally, using their mobile money wallets, bank accounts, and Visa cards, NHIS members will be able to securely pay registration and membership renewal costs with the new App.

The most recent NHIA novelty will work with both Android and iOS mobile devices.

The NHIS Mobile Application App will generate digital NHIS cards and give the NHIA a way to carry out its legal obligations.

Most importantly, because it saves time and money, the innovation will significantly improve the renewal experience for NHIS members, making the Scheme far more accessible to all citizens in Ghana and abroad.

It is crucial that Ghanaians both at home and abroad utilize the recently launched MyNHIS App to save time, money, enhance convenience, get rid of data entry errors, and boost effectiveness.

NHIA Digitalization enthusiasm

The NHIA is using the national push toward digitalization to transition to a paperless system.

The Authority is constantly developing strong domestic ideas aimed at reducing costs and increasing productivity.
