Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Scalise is the third child of real estate broker Alfred Joseph Scalise, who died on October 8, 2015, at the age of 77, and Carol Schilleci. Tara Scalise and Glenn Scalise are his siblings. In the late 1800s, Scalise’s great-grandparents left Italy to immigrate to the US.
After graduating from Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie, Jefferson Parish, he went on to Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge to get a Bachelor of Science in computer science with a political science minor. Scalise belonged to the Acacia Fraternity while he was an undergraduate student at LSU.
He is currently a member of the American Italian Renaissance Foundation’s board of directors, which provides funding for the American Italian Cultural Center. Scalise was a Republican who held the majority whip post in the House from 2014 to 2019 and the minority whip position from 2019 to 2023.

In October 2023, House Republicans nominated him for Speaker of the United States House of Representatives after Kevin McCarthy was removed from office—a move that Scalise disagreed with.
Scalise held three terms in the Louisiana House of Representatives and a four-month stint in the Louisiana State Senate before entering Congress. From 2013 to 2014, he chaired the House Republican Study Committee as well. Scalise was chosen by his fellow Republicans on June 19, 2014, to serve as the majority whip of the US House of Representatives. He took office on August 1.
Interestingly, he is the first Louisianan to serve as majority whip since 1962–1971, when Hale Boggs of the state’s second congressional district held the office. After Senator David Vitter retired in 2017, Scalise assumed the role of dean of the congressional delegation from Louisiana. His district includes parts of New Orleans proper as well as a sizable chunk of the city’s suburbs, such as Metairie, Kenner, and Slidell.
