As a result of being heard in a leaked video proposing a position and requesting that U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake specify a price that would keep her out of politics, Jeff DeWit, the chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, resigned on Wednesday.

The Republican Party is unsettled by DeWit’s exit in a state that will be crucial in the fight for the U.S. Senate and White House in the November election.

When the recording was made in March of last year, Lake was preparing for a 2020 U.S. Senate candidacy and fighting an unsuccessful legal battle to overturn her defeat in the Arizona gubernatorial election of 2022. Hurt by a lackluster performance in the midterm elections, Republicans in Washington were discussing openly their intention to pursue GOP Senate nominees who would be more competitive in general elections.

In what he called a “selectively edited” recording, DeWit tells Lake, “There are very powerful people that want to keep you out.” “However, they’re not afraid to heavily invest in their words.”

He stated they were “back East,” but he did not specify who asked him to approach Lake. He requests her several times to keep the conversation between them a secret.

At one point, DeWit asks, “Is there a number at which—” and Lake responds, “I can be bought.”

DeWit announced his resignation in a statement, claiming that he had intended to fight for his position until Lake’s team threatened to disclose another, more damaging recording unless he resigned.

“Given our many previous candid discussions as friends, I have chosen not to take the chance, even though I am genuinely uncertain of its contents,” DeWit stated.

He declared that his intention was not to buy Lake off, but rather to give her frank counsel to forego the Senate contest and seek reelection as governor in 2028.

“Our friendship was the foundation of our relationship, and the conversation under scrutiny was an honest, candid conversation between friends in her living room,” DeWit stated. “I really thought I was giving someone I thought of as a friend a useful viewpoint.”

Former TV news anchor Lake has a tendency to turn recordings of her conflicts into weapons.

She frequently wears a little microphone when making public appearances, and her husband—a former news photographer—records whatever she says to the media, the press, and everybody else she meets. She occasionally shares footage of heated exchanges on social media.

A video of Lake’s lawyer speaking over the phone with a Maricopa County attorney was posted on Twitter by the campaign, where Lake was claiming the county had stolen her bid for Arizona governor in 2022. Courts have consistently dismissed her allegations of fraud.

However, DeWit did not appear to realize that he was being filmed, even when Lake gave talking points like to those of a campaign to an audience that was not there.

Days before former President Donald Trump is set to speak at an Arizona GOP fundraiser and the party’s annual state committee meeting—the latter of which is in dire need of funding—the recording was leaked. The Daily Mail was the first to publish it.

In her public appearances, Lake has frequently discussed the meeting—without name her visitor—using it to support her narrative as an outsider upending a corrupt system.

With regard to Lake’s “disturbing tendency to exploit private interactions for personal gain,” DeWit went all out, calling it alarming considering how much time Lake spends with Trump.

“When a United States Senator can’t be trusted to have private and confidential conversations, I wonder how effective they can be as a senator?” DeWit remarked.

DeWit served as NASA’s top financial officer while Trump was president and as chief operating officer for his campaigns in 2016 and 2020. He was viewed as a reliable and skilled operator who could heal the rift between Arizona’s old-guard Republicans—many of whom were introduced to the party by the late Sen. John McCain—and Trump supporters.

He served as Arizona’s elected state treasurer prior to that.

At Trump’s New Hampshire primary victory party late on Tuesday, Lake informed reporters that DeWit needed to resign.

“The Republican Party cannot be led by a corrupt or compromised individual,” she declared.
