Prepare yourselves for Halle Bailey to enter your world. At Disney’s D23 expo, the first trailer for the eagerly anticipated “Little Mermaid” live-action adaptation debuted, showcasing the celebrated R&B performer and actor in the legendary role of mermaid princess Ariel.
This was a live action musical, which was praised by director Rob Marshall of “Chicago” renown. Speaking of the previous Oscar-winning film, he said, “When we started this journey it was very important to honor the original” while also reimagining and “bringing some depth” to the new movie. The director also asked “Little Mermaid” longtime Disney alum and Alan Menken to link up with the award-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda to come up with four new songs. “They’d never collaborated together before, and it’s magical…. We still retain the beauty of the original score by the late great Howard Ashman.”

Bailey “came in and claimed the role,” Marshall said of the new mermaid. Marshall debuted the first-ever footage from “The Little Mermaid” featuring Bailey singing the iconic “Part of Your World” song shortly after the intro (for the D23 crowd only). The hall was deafeningly quiet as it took in this familiar but novel performance. Several audience members were visibly moved by this heart-stopping performance. “She’s so good,” one audience member exclaimed, “I have chills.”
