Born on February 2nd, 1990, he started karting in Ireland in 1999, started rallying in 2007, and combined the two in Europe in 2008.
He switched to rallying full-time in 2009 and competed in the Irish, British, and International Fiesta Sporting Trophies, taking home victories in all three competitions.
Craig Breen went on to win the Fiesta Sport Trophy International Shootout, collect the Billy Coleman Award, a 12-month contract with M-Sport, and be named the Young Irish Rally Driver of the Year.
In the British Rally Championship and the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship in 2010, he made his Ford Fiesta S2000 debut.
On the 2010 Ulster Rally, he won his maiden BRC race and went on to place second overall in the ITC. He also placed 12th overall at the Wales Rally GB and 17th overall with the car in the 2010 Rally Finland.
Breen participated in the WRC Academy in 2011 while operating a Ford Fiesta R2. At the Rallye Deutschland, he took first place in the World Rally Championship, and the Wales Rally GB victory crowned him the inaugural WRC Academy Cup champion.
His class victories at the Monte Carlo Rally, Wales Rally GB, Rally France, and Rally of Spain helped him win the 2012 Super 2000 WRC.
He advanced to the S-WRC championship in 2012 while operating a Ford Fiesta S2000. Additionally, he won the first round in Monte Carlo and had the lead in the championship following the second round in Sweden.
Peugeot hired Breen and co-driver Paul Nagle in 2013 to spearhead their ERC initiative known as “Peugeot Rally Academy.”
Breen had a strong season, placing on the podium five times, and ultimately taking third place overall, just four points behind the runner-up.
Driving a Peugeot 208 T16, Breen won his maiden ERC event at the 2014 Acropolis event in Greece. He also triumphed alongside co-driver Scott Martin at the 2015 Circuit of Ireland Rally.
Through hard work and perseverance, Craig Breen advanced through the ranks to become one of the most in-demand rally drivers.
Breen last participated part-time for the Hyundai squad in the World Rally Championship in October 2021, and it was reported in October 2021 that he will join M-Sport World Rally squad as their lead driver for the 2022 season.
Craig Breen has sadly passed away. At the age of 33, he passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2023, during a practice run for the Croatia Rally.
According to reports, Breen was killed after the front left of his automobile slammed with a post on a road between Stari Golubovec and Lobor around 12:40 p.m. local time. James Fulton, his co-driver, was unharmed, though.
