He is most remembered for his time with The Drifters in the middle of the 1950s; he provided the vocals for popular songs like “When My Little Girl Is Smiling” and “Sweets for My Sweet.”
In 1988, Thomas and other band members were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. When My Little Girl Is Smiling debuted at No. 28 the next year, ‘Sweets for My Sweet’ peaked at No. 16 on the Hot 100 in 1961.
The Rhythm and Blues Foundation also presented the iconic R&B vocalist with a Pioneer Award in 1999.

One of Thomas’ close friends, Peter Lemongello Jr., verified his passing, as reported by The New York Times: “He was aging, but he was active practically every weekend.
Sadly, he stopped being active and began to become sedentary at home, which led to his decline. Lemongello told the newspaper that Thomas lost his long struggle with liver cancer before passing away.
