He attended Centennial Public Schools in Utica, Nebraska before moving to Kearney High School, where he played high school football for the Bearcats. He became enamored with American football at a young age.
He converted 8 of his 14 field goals, 41 of his 46 extra points, and averaged 41.1 yards on each punt as a senior. A wide receiver as well, Brett finished the season with 775 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, earning All-State recognition from the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World-Herald.
He played in every game as the holder for field goals and extra points as a redshirt freshman and sophomore, and he also filled in as Alex Henery’s backup punter.
