After an alleged hazing ceremony in which a kitchen hand was allegedly tied naked to a chair for hours with an apple in his mouth and a carrot in his buttocks, a French celebrity chef resigned from his position at an opulent hotel.
The restaurant of the renowned Hotel du Palais in Biarritz, southwest France, was run by Aurelien Largeau, 31, a sought Michelin star holder, until he departed last week.
A representative for Hyatt, the hotel’s owners, confirmed AFP that the management had been made aware of a “troubling incident” that included footage that had been circulated online.

She did not elaborate on the contents of the photos, but the local daily Sud Ouest said that they depicted an initiation ceremony taking place in the hotel kitchen.
AFP claims that while the cooks, known as the “kitchen brigade,” watched, including Largeau, a kitchen worker was chained to a chair in the nude for hours with an apple in his mouth and a carrot in his anus.
Since then, the video has been taken down from the internet.

According to Sud Ouest, the ‘humiliating’ act happened ‘under the authority, and in the presence of, chef Aurelien Largeau’.
“The Management Team at Hôtel du Palais has concluded an investigation that was launched immediately following concerning allegations and imagery regarding an incident in the hotel’s premises,” Hyatt stated in a statement.
The occurrence did not align with the strong principles that each of us upholds, and the necessary actions have now been taken.

The average nightly rate for the five-star hotel on the sea in Biarritz is more than 400 euros (£348).
Despite being illegal in France, hazing—a humiliating initiation process—reports indicate that it nevertheless happens in French eateries. It is occasionally justified as an assessment of junior employees’ capacity to withstand work-related stress.
‘Hands off my Kitchen Hand’ and ‘Respect your Kitchen’ are two initiatives that culinary professionals have established in response to violence in kitchens.
Largeau was hired in March 2020, according to Sud Ouest.
Not too long after the Hotel du Palais reopened in 2021, he received a Michelin star and, later, the title of ‘Great of Tomorrow’ from Gault & Millau, the newspaper stated.
