Fire gutted about 24 structures at a slum located at the Santase Roundabout checkpoint in Kumasi, regional capital of the Ashanti Region.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, began around 11 p.m.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have said about 75 people were rendered homeless by the inferno.

Properties amounting to thousands of Ghana cedis were lost to the disaster.

According to NADMO, about GHS3,000 was also burnt in the fire but no casualties were recorded.

Some of the victims disclosed that the fire started from a colleague’s room and swept through other structures but the intervention of firefighters brought the situation under control.

Preliminary investigations, according to the NADMO Director in charge of Operations at Nhyiaeso, Mr Ofori Agbley, suggest that the inferno was caused by a burning candle.

A victim, Abila Aguure told Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that she lost everything to the fire “including my GHS750 which I left in my room.”

The victims appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to come to their aid since they have nowhere to seek refuge.
