William Lee McGinest Jr.(aka willie mcginest), a retired American football linebacker who spent most of his time with the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL), was born on December 11, 1971. In the 1994 NFL Draft, the Patriots picked him fourth overall after he played college football at USC.

He played for the team for 12 seasons during which time he was selected for two Pro Bowls and won three Super Bowls. Additionally, McGinest is the leader in postseason sacks. He was admitted to the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2015 for his work in New England.

Early life and career

McGinest, the second of four kids, went to Long Beach Polytechnic High School and was named all-state in basketball and football. He received all-american honors in football from the publications Super Prep, Blue Chip, and Tom Lemming.

He was also chosen for various all-star teams and won all-city, all-state, and all-regional accolades as a linebacker in 1989. As a senior, he made 107 tackles overall, including 18 sacks, two fumble recoveries, four passes defended, one of which was intercepted, and four kicks blocked.

McGinest was chosen to join Poly’s Football Hall of Fame in 2009. He averaged 14 points per game during the 1989–1990 season, earning him Long Beach Press–Telegram “Best in the West,” All–CIF Southern Section, and all–league accolades.

College career

McGinest participated in football at the University of Southern California from 1990 to 1993. His shirt’s ID was 55. McGinest received All-Conference and All-American recognition three years in a row.

He was a nominee for the Lombardi Award, All-American, and All-Pac-10 league accolades during his senior year. For the Trojans, he started each game at weak-side defensive end.

With 193 tackles (134 solo), 29 sacks (171 yards), 48 tackles for loss (238 yards), and 26 passes batted away, McGinest ended his collegiate career. In 1994, McGinest graduated from USC with a degree in public administration.
