The Watermelon Processing Plant is one of the promises made to the people of the area by the current government which says it is determined to have it executed
Recently at the Damba festival in Nalerigu, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia reechoed that the dream of the government is to see the project come alive hinting a sod cutting ceremony will take place before the year ends.
Farmers have over the years consistently counted their losses every watermelon harvest with some forced to take whatever price they can get for the produce and eventually having to give them away so they can clear the land and prepare for planting season.
Phase One of the project will bring together over 2000 peasant farmers from across the north East region into a cooperative for an out grower scheme and assure them a ready market season after season, year after year.
