Tom Owen, who played Tom in The Last of the Summer Wine, has passed away.

For ten years starting in 2000, Owen portrayed the roving Tom Simmonite in the well-liked and enduring BBC sitcom. After his father, Bill Owen, played Compo Simmonite, his on-screen father, his presence on the show followed a family legacy.

He also appeared on The Bill, The Onedin Line, and Upstairs Downstairs on television.

His ex-wife Mary, his two children James and William, and his relatives reported he went away quietly.

After graduating from high school, Owen started his acting career, and it was thanks in large part to his father that he was able to secure his first position as an assistant stage manager at the Leatherhead theatre in Surrey. He worked there for a year before leaving to accept a similar position at the Westminster Theatre.

Owen returned to the repertory theater in Sidmouth, Devon, after spending four years working in television, where he continued to act and direct plays.

Only a few days after Compo’s father passed away from cancer in July 1999, Owen was selected to play the long-lost son.

He first learned about the search through Roy Clarke, the show’s writer, when the producer Alan Bell called him.

According to Owen in 2000, “It was two or three days after Dad had passed away.” Naturally, planning the burial was on my thoughts. It never even crossed my mind that I may be asked to play Compo’s long-lost son. I gave Alan’s notion some thinking for two seconds before responding in the affirmative.

In response to being cast, he remarked: “At first, when I got on set, it was extremely odd. Although it was emotional, I made the decision early on that the only way I could handle it was by acting professionally. I was very aware of the potential suspicion the other cast members would have towards me. When Dad died, they were all subjected to a tremendous shock. Additionally, they had known him for all of those years.

“Dad loved the show, and I believe he would be really happy to learn that it will go on, in a sense carrying on in his memory. He would likely be overjoyed that I have taken his place, in my opinion.

He starred in the 2018 motion picture The Bromley Boys.
