A shooting at the Mall of America on Friday December 2022 today that terrified patrons and quickly put the country’s largest retail complex on lockdown just before the holiday weekend claimed the life of a teenager, according to police.

The victim, according to Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges, was a 19-year-old man. During the incident at the mall’s Nordstrom, a bullet also grazed a spectator’s jacket.

The man was shot multiple times during what seemed to be some sort of fight between two groups, according to the chief. The whole thing took place for roughly 30 seconds.

Hodges asked the shooter and the other combatants to report to the police.

He declared, “We’re going to catch you, lock you up, and give you an orange jumpsuit.” “It just depends on when it will happen.”

He also urged people not to help the accused evade capture.

The obviously furious chief stated, “If somebody assists these guys, I mean so much as buy them a Happy Meal, give them a ride.” “We’re going to imprison you with them.”

Hodges stated that although the mall is anticipated to reopen on Saturday, the Nordstrom shop will not.

The mall has served as a tourist destination and a hub for neighborhood gatherings ever since it opened in 1992. Although it prohibits guns on the property, consumers are typically not compelled to go through metal detectors. The mall said in October that one of its entrances was being used to test a “weapons detecting system.”

Hodges stated that the mall is always assessing its security protocols, including the potential use of metal detectors. The chief said, “I still don’t know what we can do to stop it, though, if we have an instance where someone decides they want to pull a pistol and shoot someone with a complete lack of respect for human life.”

Although the victim’s identity has not been released by the police, Hodges and Bloomington Mayor Tim Busse claim to have spoken to the victim’s family on Friday night.

I genuinely feel horrible for the family here, Hodges said. They had to bury one of their loved ones in the final week before Christmas.

According to the chief, the disagreement between the two groups—which consisted of between five and nine people—erupt into a fistfight before one person pulled a gun and started shooting.

Hodges stated, “We don’t know what happened or why it happened.

Around 7:50 p.m., one of 16 Bloomington police officers stationed at the mall in the area heard gunshots. Despite the officer’s best efforts, the victim passed away.

Before the mall tweeted that customers were being sent outside after an hour-long lockdown. Social media videos depict customers sheltering inside of stores, while a mall announcement urged shoppers to find shelter. In some films, consumers can be seen rushing for cover after hearing a huge blast.

Days before Christmas, retail malls and centers around the United States saw a surge in foot traffic.

Jenny Hefty of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and her daughter, 16, were standing in front of the Nordstrom shop on the second floor of the mall when people began running and yelling in their direction. Hefty did not hear the gunshots, but her daughter did.

We initially believed that they were playing around, she told The Associated Press on Friday evening. “Why are all these youngsters sprinting by us?” was the question.

Armed security guards rushed toward Nordstrom, where Hefty had been putting on perfume approximately 20 minutes earlier, as stores started closing their doors and her husband ordered them to flee.

The couple’s 18-year-old daughter, 21-year-old son, and their pals were desperately trying to be reached on their cellphones as the group hurried to their hotel in the mall complex. As the mall was locked down, they had been forced into the stores or escorted to safer areas.

The family, which frequently drives the four hours to the mall, was in town on Saturday to watch the Minnesota Vikings play the New York Giants in football.

Hefty affirmed, “Of course we wanted to come early and do some Christmas shopping.

The Giants were lodging in a hotel close to the shopping center. The team’s executive vice president of communications, Pat Hanlon, stated that he thinks some players were in the mall when the incident occurred.

Hanlon reported Friday night that “everyone is back in the hotel and accounted for at this time.”

The mall was put on lockdown in August after two people were injured on New Year’s Eve amid an apparent dispute and a reported shooting sent some shoppers scurrying for safety at the Minneapolis suburbia shopping center.
