Richard Belzer Cause Of Death: Did Munch Richard Belzer Pass Away? American actor, comedian, and author Richard Belzer is best known for playing Detective John Munch in a number of television episodes.

He was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on August 4, 1944, and was raised by Jewish parents. Belzer studied journalism at Northeastern University in Boston after transferring from Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts.

In the 1970s, Belzer started his career in entertainment as a stand-up comedian, appearing at a number of New York City venues. In 1978, he appeared on “Saturday Night Live” and gave a monologue on his encounters with UFOs. This helped him become well-known across the country. Belzer went on to perform in other comedy specials and talk shows, becoming known for his deadpan style and quirky wit.

Belzer made his acting debut in William Peter Blatty’s 1981 movie “The Ninth Configuration.” He then appeared in “The Natural,” “Scarface,” and “Fame” (1982–1983). (1984). On the television show “Homicide: Life on the Street,” Belzer started playing Detective John Munch in 1993. Belzer’s portrayal of the character, which was based on a real-life Baltimore investigator, won praise from critics. Before moving to the spin-off series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” he appeared on the show for seven seasons.

One of the most known television characters of the 2000s was Belzer, who played Detective Munch on the television series “Law & Order: SVU.” From 1999 until 2014, the character appears on the program for fifteen seasons. Moreover, Belzer played Detective Munch in crossover episodes of “The X-Files,” “The Beat,” and “Arrested Development.”

Belzer is a novelist in addition to being an actor, having written several books. In 1999, he released his debut book, “UFOs, JFK, and Elvis: Conspiracies You Don’t Have to Be Crazy to Believe.” He published “How to Be a Stand-Up Comedian” (2008), “I Am Not a Cop!” (2009), and “Dead Wrong: Plain Facts on the Country’s Most Controversial Cover-Ups” in the years that followed (2012).

Belzer’s professional life has not been free of scandal. He was sued in 1992 for making disparaging remarks about a female flight attendant while performing a comedy routine. Outside of court, the dispute was resolved. Belzer and a Fox News producer got into a violent brawl while doing an interview in 2006. The incident was caught on camera, and it was covered extensively in the media.

In 2016, Belzer declared his retirement from acting, citing health issues. He still makes sporadic cameos in movies and television series, nevertheless. He has recently been active on social media, interacting with his fans and offering his opinions on politics and current affairs.

Belzer passed away quietly. His longtime friend Bill Scheft confirmed to USA TODAY that he died on Sunday at his house in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, southern France, where he lived with his family.
