Joe Ghartey, a member of parliament for Essikado-Ketan, has declined the bride price from her daughter’s suitor, stating that “she is not for sale.”

Joe Ghartey, the bride’s father, decided to simply take the ring and a Bible, rejecting the dowry and other necessities.

In the ceremony’s video, the former attorney general and second deputy speaker claimed to have established the tradition when he married his wife and brought the same gifts to her family.

He went on to claim that he didn’t want to give any more pressure to the newlyweds as they started their family. adding that the happiness and longevity of their marriage is his top priority.

“Ewurama, may God bless you. Your husband’s family brought the Bible and the ring. I just took a ring and a Bible when I went to ask your mother’s family for her hand in marriage.

“If you and your husband decide to have children, you can continue this tradition. It will be proper to do so even if I’m gone by then. You two can’t be made to do it by me. You are taking this trip together.

The bridegroom and his family gave their appreciation in return and said how happy they were to be a part of the Hon. Ghartey’s family.

The representative for the groom’s family explained the unusual request made by the bride’s father.

When we went to see our father, Joe Ghartey, to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage, we had one of the most interesting conversations ever. He asserted that the pair had just had a baby and he didn’t want to add to their burden. He only requested a Bible to serve as a manual during difficult times and a ring to indicate that this woman is married.

He only wished for that. Aside from the Bible and the ring, he added that he would refuse all other goods. We loved the woman so much that we did as she asked. We’re here today because we have everything we need to ask for her hand in marriage, so that’s why you can see us.
